Steph & Peter Shilton visit Ara in Bristol

Peter and Steph Shilton visit Ara

Yesterday the Six To Ten team met with Steph and Peter Shilton OBE at Ara Head Office in Bristol.

We discussed gambling addiction and how the Six To Ten project is helping people affected by a loved one’s gambling.

Steph had a great in-depth interview with BBC Radio Bristol to promote awareness of gambling harms and how the Six To Ten project provides free support.

Listen to John Darvell interview Steph on Radio Bristol  here:

Steph discusses how she met Peter Shilton, and found out he was one of the most successful footballers of all time. Over time, his addiction to gambling gradually began to show. Peter had been secretly betting for many years and had lost over one million pounds. This included secret online gambling in the middle of the night when Steph thought he was asleep.

Thankfully, Peter was able to fight his addiction to gambling and has been in recovery for over 7 years now. Steph brings a wealth of lived experience to her role as an ambassador and support worker for the Six To Ten project and is determined to help people who are currently being affected by a loved one’s gambling.

Peter and Steph were also interviewed by BBC Points West – watch the interview here:

The Six To Ten project

The Six To Ten Project is a partner project between three organisations dedicated to supporting those affected by disordered gambling to rebuild their lives:

Ara Recovery For All

Beacon Counselling Trust

DrugFam

Between 6 and 10 people on average are affected by a person’s gambling problem (known as “affected others”). We’re setting out to make sure everyone has access to the help and advice they need. This includes free counselling and help with a range of issues, with a dedicated support worker.

An affected other is a person directly impacted by an individual’s harmful gambling. This may include:

  • Partners
  • Parents
  • Siblings
  • Children
  • Grandparents
  • Friends
  • Work colleagues
