HOUSING FIRST BRISTOL
Ara's Housing First Initiative
The Ara Bristol Housing First initiative is a transformative approach to tackling homelessness in Bristol by providing decent, long-term housing andstrengths-based, flexible support with the aim of helping individuals rebuild their lives. Delivered in partnership with Bristol City Council, this programme is designed to break the cycle of homelessness for people who have histories of entrenched or repeat rough sleeping, often with multiple and serious support needs.

A Proven Model for Lasting Change
Our Housing First initiative is transforming the way homelessness is tackled in Bristol. Instead of making people prove they are ‘tenancy ready,’ Housing First provides secure, self-contained homes first, alongside flexible, tailored support.
The APPG Housing First Report (2021) found that Housing First sustainably ends homelessness for 80% of its clients—a success rate far higher than traditional models. It also saves money: for every £1 spent on Housing First, £1.56 is saved in reduced costs to the NHS, mental health services, and homelessness support.
Our Commitment to Bristol
With funding from Bristol City Council and support from key partners, We deliver Housing First to 30 individuals facing chronic homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges.
- Unconditional housing—no need to prove ‘readiness’ before getting a home.
- Long-term support—our team provides ongoing, personalised support to address trauma, addiction, and mental health.
- Stronger communities—by giving people stability, we reduce pressure on emergency services and improve long-term outcomes.

Real Voices, Real Impact
“I don’t think I could get clean without having Housing First and having the space of a house of my own. Not being surrounded by other addicts in their addiction which set me off.”
“With the help of my Housing First support worker I was able to address the problems I faced, I got help with my mental health and got clean from all drugs…I honestly believe if I wasn’t introduced to Housing First and this program I wouldn’t be here to tell any story.”
“It felt like I was always going round and round in circles from one place to the next, nothing was settled or permanent or stable, which made things worse... I always just wanted to settle and have somewhere safe, with support that I could trust, and that people would understand why I behaved the way I had.”
